Who are We?

Mt. Zion MBC - Bakersfield:

A Community Dedicated to Seeking God and Serving People

Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church is the Beacon of Light and Christian Values for 137 years in Bakersfield, CA. Founded in the year 1886 and still standing strong in faith and holding on to the hands of the Almighty God for its existence in this new era. With Mt. Zion MBC-Bakersfield lasted this long is a manifestation of God's goodness toward His people. We will continue to serve God beyond these years.

Ephesians 5:23 says, "Christ is head of the church" and we know that the church is a "band " of baptized believers in Jesus Christ. The church maybe located in the wilderness, on the seashore, in a grand cathedral, or in any place desirable. The years have taken the "Old Ship of Mt. Zion" through many hills and valleys but our faith in our Lord and Savior has kept it anchored.

Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church is here to glorify God as we keep His Commandment, "The Marching Orders" of the Church that our Savior gave us in Matthew 28:19-20, "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and , lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen".

As Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church moves into the millennium and the age of outer space travels, let us not forget that our God has brought our Church through so many ages. And the same God that brought us through these periods of time will keep us in many more ages to come. " He didn't Bring Us This Far to Leave Us". He is the God of yesterday, today and tomorrow".- Hebrews 13:8

Mt. Zion MBC-Bakersfield today, under the leadership of Pastor & Sis Calhoun, is standing strong and steadfast in its commitment to help every person believe in Jesus, belong to a family, become a disciple and build God's kingdom. Mt. Zion MBC-Bakersfield had been spreading God's Word for the last 136 years and with God’s guidance will continue to do the same for many more years to come.

We are an active member of the San Joaquin Missionary Baptist Association (SJMBA) and the California Missionary Baptist State Convention (CMBSC).

Our Pastor, Rev. Hiawatha T. Calhoun was CMBSC  Vice President at Large  for 14 years and SJMBA Moderator for more than 2 decades.

Come, Join Our Sunday School

The Church Sunday School of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church-Bakersfield, would like to extend a warm invitation to you and your family to join us for Sunday School at 10 a.m. every Sunday. We start at the Sanctuary at 10:00 AM for Devotion and conduct our classes in the classrooms provided for each class. We cater for all ages as we have two classes for Adults, 1 class for the Youth and 1 class for young kids.

We believe that attending Sunday School is the best way to get involved in the life of the Church and to know God and Jesus. We have WONDERFUL teachers for all ages, teachers of a spiritual depth and instructional capability. They will stretch your imagination and guide you such that you will know and grow closer to Jesus than you have ever been before.

Attending Sunday School is a powerful way to influence the lives of people, and we use the Bible, God’s Holy Word, as our primary textbook. Our Lord Jesus referred to Himself as, “Teacher” and He was given that title by other people more than any other designation. You see, Jesus didn’t just come to DIE FOR us. He also came to TEACH us how to LIVE according to God’s Commandments and how to be obedient to God.

If your weekly schedule doesn’t include the Sunday School hour, we encourage you to add it! The Bible is no ordinary book. It is an excellent source of God’s Word. And no Sunday School class session is an ordinary period of time. It is the time to study God’s Word and know God and Jesus more. So we are inviting you and your family to join us this Sunday and every Sunday after, it is vital to your spiritual health.

God Bless and see you soon!
